Overview of the session
As market context, the speakers provided snapshots of the cleantech fund raising, licensing and patent landscapes:
In the first half of 2026 USD15 billion was raised from seed to growth-stage funding. Examples of successful transactions were provided.
Licensing and litigation are flourishing due to the rate of innovation and development of IP portfolios.
During the last decade, China had dominated sustainable energy patent finings
After reviewing patent filing activity if different cleantech fields and jurisdictions, David Kark explained that while R&D creates technology, it is an effective IP strategy that captures value. He provided an overview of different categories of IP and presented an invention harvesting framework, explaining the difference between patentability and freedom to operate. David used a case study to illustrate how a technology’s potential can vary by market.
Referring to IP economics, Tim Heberden explained how patented technology offers exceptional commercial leverage: the same IP can be monetised simultaneously across multiple applications, partners and jurisdiction, including through joint ventures and licences that requiring little or no capital. He used a case study showing how a blinkered approach to IP management squanders the potential of IP economics.
After presenting an evaluation framework that maps IP capacity to market opportunities and value, Tim described a range of successful applications of this approach:
